1-year or 3-year?
What is the difference between the 1-year and 3-year International Driving Permit?
Both are an official translation of your driving licence, and both cost NOK 290. The difference is which UN convention they are based on – and therefore which countries accept them.
1-year
Valid for 1 year. Required in, among others, the United States, Japan, Canada, India and New Zealand.
See all 44 countries3-year
Valid for up to 3 years. Required in, among others, Thailand, Brazil, South Africa, Vietnam and Morocco.
See all 129 countries- Visiting several countries? If they require different versions, you need both – for example for Thailand and Japan.
- The 3-year permit never outlasts your driving licence. If you renew your licence or a licence category, you must also order a new International Driving Permit.

Anyone with a Norwegian driving licence or a driving licence from another EU/EEA country can get an International Driving Permit in Norway, provided they have a registered permanent address in Norway.
Regular orders are normally processed within 1–3 business days. We produce International Driving Permits on Mondays and Thursdays and send them with Posten the following Tuesday or Friday.
After dispatch, Posten normally needs 3–5 business days within Norway.
If you are in a hurry, choose express. Express orders received before 12:00 on a business day are produced and sent the same day.
The 1-year permit is issued under the Geneva Convention (1949) and the 3-year permit under the Vienna Convention (1968). Each country decides which version it accepts, so check the country list before you order.
Yes. The International Driving Permit is only a translation of your driving licence and is only valid together with it.
It depends on where you are going. Most popular destinations accept the 3-year permit, but some countries, such as the United States and Japan, require the 1-year permit. If you are visiting both Thailand and Japan, for example, you need both.
Within the EU/EEA you do not need an International Driving Permit if you have a credit-card style licence. KNA still recommends one for some EU/EEA countries, because members have reported problems with authorities or car rental companies without it – most often in Southern and Eastern Europe.
Yes. Send us a copy of your temporary licence in the same way as a regular licence. If you will not receive your physical licence before you travel, remember to get an English version of your temporary licence from the Norwegian Public Roads Administration (Statens vegvesen).
The International Driving Permit includes translations into French, English, Russian, Spanish, Portuguese, Arabic, Chinese (simplified), Thai and Greek.
No. We cannot issue a permit if you live abroad. If you have a registered address in Norway and are already abroad, we recommend having the permit sent to a family member or someone you trust in Norway, who can forward it to you by registered mail.
Three organizations can issue International Driving Permits in Norway: the Royal Norwegian Automobile Club (KNA), Motorførernes Avholdsforbund (MA) and the Norwegian Automobile Federation (NAF), under section 13-1 of the Norwegian Driving Licence Regulations. The permit is valid for as long as your national licence is valid, for a maximum of three years.
Authorized issuer
KNA is an authorized issuer of International Driving Permits
The Royal Norwegian Automobile Club (Kongelig Norsk Automobilklub, KNA) is one of three organizations authorized to issue International Driving Permits in Norway. The authorization follows from section 13-1 of the Norwegian Driving Licence Regulations, and the Norwegian Public Roads Administration (Statens vegvesen) lists KNA as an issuer.
KNA is a membership organization, not a government agency. The permit you get from us is issued under the same UN conventions and is equivalent to the permit from the other authorized issuers.
